“I’m an advocate of apprenticeships and professional qualifications; I’ve completed many during a career in Learning & Development spanning nearly 20 years (including some self-funded ones). The apprenticeships that appealed to me the most were those relevant to my roles/career aspirations including Coaching Level 5, Learning & Development Level 3, and Business Change Excellence. I recommend apprenticeships because they provide structure and support throughout, that may not be otherwise available when self-studying for a qualification.”
“There are lots of apprenticeship standards relating to different business areas, specialisms, and qualification levels. Everywhen’s talent programme pages on Engage provides a flavour of what is available. It's important to ensure the apprenticeship is relevant to your role/business, so you have opportunity to put learning into practice and build evidence.”
“I enjoy exploring learning with others, including fellow apprentices during workshops, coaching sessions with tutors or sharing learnings with my mentor, all can help identify “off the Job” learning opportunities (the activities which helps embeds the academic learning you’re undertaking).”
“I’m surprised a lot of misconceptions about apprenticeships still exists i.e. false beliefs that they are only for young people, restricted to trade jobs, or are inferior to degrees. Apprenticeships can help people progress in a wide range of careers and the funding can often come from a government levy that employers pay in to. I recommend Apprenticeships! They are a great way to learn and designed to develop you in your role. However, I also recommend taking time to explore what is expected of you, ensure you have the right support and can access environments conducive to learning before enrolling. I remember struggling to juggle everything while doing an apprenticeship during the pandemic including full-time work, move to home working and protecting study time while raising a newborn and toddler. If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
