Eight of the best ski destinations in Europe

Picture this. You’re carving your way down the side of a mountain with the cool, crisp air brushing past your cheeks and that rush of adrenaline coursing through your body with every turn. The snow is soft under your skis, and the sky above is bright blue.

If that sounds like your kind of escape, then it might be the perfect time to plan your next ski trip. And with more than 4,000 ski resorts across Europe, there’s no shortage of great places to strap on a pair of skis.

Here are eight of the best places to go skiing this spring:

1. St Anton, Austria

It’s not hard to see why St Anton is a great pick for skiing. Aside from the fact that it feels like you’ve just stepped into a postcard, it also has a great track record of snow lasting until the end of the season in April.

St Anton is a favourite for confident skiers who enjoy a challenge, but that’s not all. After all the lifts close, the town comes to life with its well-known après scene.

2. Kitzbühel, Austria

If you’re looking for a ski resort with a touch of medieval charm, Kitzbühel is the one for you. Home to the Hahnenkamn race (one of the world’s most revered FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races), the area is typically blessed with 155 days of snow each year. There’s over 170km of sweeping pistes to try your hand at, from peaceful beginner level slopes to the chance to test yourself on the infamous run; The Streif.3

3. Mayrhofen, Austria

If you’re looking for a lively après ski destination with quality runs, check out Mayrhofen. Thanks to its proximity to the Hintertux Glacier, the resort gets a consistent fall of snow year-round. The ski area is features two main mountains: Ahorn offers gentle terrain for beginners, and Penken suits more intermediate skiiers. For more advanced skiiers, check out the Harakiri run, Austria’s steepest groomed run with a 78% gradient.4

4. Val d’Isère, France

Val d’Isère ski resort is a great choice for groups with a variety of abilities. Known for its energetic nightlife and Michelin-starred restaurants, Val d’Isère village has plenty to offer and is full of classic French charm. It was voted the best ski resort in Europe by Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2025.5

5. La Plagne, France

La Plagne is an excellent option for those new to skiing. Thanks to its high, gentle plateau, beginners don’t have to worry about navigating steep terrain until they’re ready. The resort is family friendly resort and even has beginner-only zones which are much usually less crowded than the main slopes.

6. Zermatt, Switzerland

If you’re looking for a ski resort of epic proportions, look no further than Zermatt in Switzerland. It offers year-round skiing and snowboarding, 4000m above sea level with state-of-the-art facilities and unbeatable views of the Matterhorn. Try your hand at freeriding or heliskiing before heading to one of the amazing restaurants to refuel before doing it all again the next day.

7. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

If there was ever a ski destination made for foodies, this is it. Cortina d’Ampezzo has so many fine dining options to pick from including rustic, cosy huts to more chic venues with exceptional cuisine and beautiful scenery across the Dolomites.  The resort is currently hosting the 2026 Winter Olympic Games until 22 February 2026, so turn on your TV for a better look at where you could be visiting.6

8. Grandvalira, Andorra

The Alps aren’t the only place for idyllic runs this spring, check out Grandvalira in Andorra, the largest resort in the Pyrenees.  This spot is a great choice for families and first timers as it offers a relaxed atmosphere and is often more affordable than the larger alpine resorts.
