What does veteran horse insurance cover?

Cover for the death of your horse

Equine mortality insurance protects you against the financial costs of death by accidental injury caused by bone fracture or visible external wounds suffered by your horse. Disposal and euthanasia costs may also be covered by your veteran horse insurance policy, depending on your policy.

Veteran horse liability cover

As part of your veteran horse insurance, public liability cover will protect you against the costs incurred by members of the public suffering personal injury or property damage because of your horse. Most policies will offer up to £2 million if you are sued because your horse has caused injury or damage, but you can also take limits of £1 million, £3 million or £5 million, depending on the policy.

Cover for theft or straying

If your veteran horse is not recovered within 60 days of being stolen or straying, you will be covered. You will be reimbursed at market value or the sum insured, whichever is less at the time. This feature of your veteran horse insurance policy offers financial peace of mind.

Veteran horse vet fees

Our veterinary fee cover pays towards the costs of veterinary surgeon fees for an accidental injury causing bone fractures or visible external wounds up to £1,500, £3000 or £5000 for any one incident (maximum of £10,000 in one period of veteran horse insurance depending on the vet’s fees sum insured chosen).

A horse is an expensive investment and an elderly horse is also more likely to fall ill and become injured. Illness, injury, theft, or an accident may result in high financial costs. The right veteran horse insurance policy could protect you against unplanned for costs, should the worst happen.

An excess is the part of a claim that you pay for yourself. Excess fees vary between insurance policies. Be sure to check your excess fees as well as your premium when selecting an equestrian insurance product. You may be offered a ‘flat excess’, which will remain the same regardless of the amount of the claim, or a ‘co-insurance contribution excess’ which will be a percentage of the amount claimed, so will be a variable amount based on the total amount claimed.

While death, theft and straying of your horse are included as standard, we also offer optional extras under our veteran horse insurance policies, including:

  • Veterinary fees

  • Personal accident for to the rider, who may be you - or another person who is handling or riding the horse, with your permission

  • Saddlery and tack – damage, loss, or theft

  • Permanent loss of use – due to e.g. accident, injury, or illness in the veteran horse

  • Horse hospitalisation costs

  • Third-party public liability

  • Tacks and saddlery cover

Certain things are excluded within our veteran horse insurance policies:

  • Slaughter (except on humane grounds) without our prior consent

  • Illness or disease in the first 14 days from inception of the policy

  • Destruction of the veteran horse as a result of economic expediency

  • Destruction of the veteran horse as a result of an undiagnosed behavioural condition

  • Liability if used in connection with a riding establishment or public rides/fetes

  • Illness caused by a behavioural issue

  • Veterinary fee cover pays towards the costs of veterinary surgeon fees for an accidental injury causing bone fractures or visible external wounds up to £1,500, £3000 or £5000 for any one incident (maximum of £10,000 in one period of veteran horse insurance depending on the vet’s fees sum insured chosen).
