How to Prepare Your Beach Hut for Winter

Beach huts are delicate structures which experience some of the roughest weather. We've put together some simple tips to help you protect your beach hut over the winter.

Batten down the hatches

Secure anything and everything. It’s best to carry out minor repairs before the winter hits to make sure everything is fixed down. Loose components, no matter how small, can cause damage and not just to the hut itself; if something were to fly off your hut and into someone’s car, for example, you could be liable for the damage.

Join your local Beach Hut Association

Beach hut associations provide a valuable service for the beach hut community. They often arrange beach hut patrols which enable owners to be alerted if their hut has been damaged. Membership is usually around £5-£10 a year and entitles you to a reduction in your insurance premium.

Not only that, but with Everywhen, membership means you also get no excess on any claim you make. However, if there is not a beach hut association in the area or you do not wish to join, don’t worry - the standard policy excess is only £50.

Give your beach hut some T.L.C.

It’s very unfortunate that beach huts are not only at risk of severe weather, but are also vulnerable to malicious damage and vandalism, but there are ways you can protect them. It’s common sense to lock up your hut as best you can. Install shutters on your windows to keep contents out of sight.

An extra little tip is to keep your hut looking its best. Local police have found that shabby looking huts are more at risk of suffering the effects of anti-social behaviour. This is a good excuse to apply an extra lick of paint from time to time!

Value your hut correctly on your beach hut insurance policy

Make sure you’re covered - whether you’re a first time hutter or an experienced owner, it’s important to get correct values for your insurance.

If you’ve made improvements to your hut, or bought some extra buckets and spades, make sure they are accounted for in the values covered on your insurance policy.
