There are currently (August 2025) some proposed regulatory changes which are focusing on patient safety and prescribing protocols for aesthetics in the UK. In this article we explore what these are and what impact they may have.
Aesthetics regulatory updates: what you need to know
Aesthetics prescriptions updates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, from 1 June 2025 the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requires all prescribers to conduct face-to-face consultations before prescribing certain aesthetic medicines, such as anti-wrinkle injections.
This will have no impact on your existing Everywhen aesthetics insurance policy, as cover is already subject to face-to-face consultations within the injectable endorsement applied to your policy.
Aesthetics regulatory updates in Scotland
Proposals are underway to expand regulations around non-surgical cosmetic procedures, with proposed legislation anticipated by April 2026.
If this legislation is agreed and passes Royal Assent, there may be a phased introduction to give practitioners ample time to adapt. The government is committed to a smooth transition, so you can continue offering your services with confidence while preparing for future compliance requirements.
Note that this is proposed legislation still going through Parliament as of August 2025, and therefore subject to change or cancellation.
Aesthetics regulatory updates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
There are plans for the proposed legislation plans to also be subsequently adopted in the same or similar manner in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, as of August 2025, these plans are at an earlier stage. They will be subject to public consultation before any formal Parliament process begins to get them introduced.
Ensure you have aesthetics treatment or premises licences
It is important to ensure you provide treatments legally and safely, by making sure you've got the right treatment or premises licence from your local authority. Check the current information for your local area.
Effect on aesthetics insurance
It is thought that as the new regulations come into effect, practitioners will be given adequate time to meet any new licensing requirements.
If there is a crossover period, the exact time you will be allowed to meet any new licensing requirements is yet to be confirmed. However, as long as the necessary licensing is obtained within the expected timeframe, your Towergate aesthetics insurance cover will continue without disruption. Your policy will therefore remain fully valid for those treatments you are covered for and that are carried out prior to the implementation of these regulations.
If for any reason you are no longer legislated to be regulated once the proposed legislation comes into force, your retroactive cover will still help you for any claims in the past covered by the period of your policy. However, you will not be covered for any subsequent claims, as your policy will not be valid going forward.
