Who needs Truck & HGV Insurance?

Truck insurance is essential for a wide range of operators, but the level of cover and risk profile can vary significantly depending on how your business is structured and how your vehicles are used.

Operator type

Why they need specialist cover

Owner-Drivers

Responsible for both vehicle and business risk. Often rely on a single vehicle, making downtime, breakdown and loss of income critical considerations.

Independent Hauliers

Typically operate across varied contracts and routes, increasing exposure to different risks, cargo types and liability requirements.

Subcontractors & Franchise Hauliers

Often work under contract to larger firms, requiring specific liability and compliance cover to meet contractual obligations.

Logistics & Distribution

Companies High-volume operations with time-sensitive deliveries can increase exposure to goods-in-transit claims, delays and operational disruption.

Construction & Plant Operators

Vehicles often operate on sites with higher risk environments, including loading hazards, uneven terrain and third-party exposure.

Waste, Recycling & Skip Hire Operators

Frequent stops, urban operations and hazardous or unpredictable loads can increase both vehicle risk and public liability exposure.

Fleet Operators

Managing multiple vehicles and drivers introduces complexity, requiring structured policies, risk management and cost control across the fleet.

Whether you operate a single vehicle or a complex fleet, the risks your business faces will depend on how and where your vehicles are used. Our specialists take the time to understand your operation, so your cover reflects your real-world exposure, not just a standard policy.

Specialist Truck & HGV cover for your industry

Different operations carry different risks. We tailor cover accordingly. We support businesses across:

Sector

Why specialist cover matters

Aggregate & Agricultural Haulage

Often involves heavy loads, rural routes, and variable terrain. The potential increased risk of vehicle wear, tipping hazards, and seasonal usage makes tailored cover essential.

Concrete Mixers

Continuous operation, heavy rotating loads and time-sensitive deliveries may increase mechanical and operational risks, as well as potential site liability exposure.

Livestock & Dairy Transport

Carrying live animals or perishable goods introduces welfare considerations, spoilage risk, and strict compliance requirements that standard policies may not fully address.

Pallets & Containers

High-volume, often high-value goods being transported through distribution networks can increase exposure to theft, damage and goods-in-transit claims.

Plant & Machinery

Transport Moving heavy or specialist equipment may create higher-value risk and loading/unloading hazards, requiring enhanced liability and goods protection.

Skip Hire

Vehicles may operate in tight urban environments and construction sites, which can increase third-party damage risk and exposure during placement and collection of skips.

Waste & Recycling

Can involve hazardous or unpredictable loads, frequent stops, and complex working environments, which may increase both vehicle and public liability risks.

The risks associated with different types of haulage can vary. The above are examples of factors that may influence the level of cover required.

Truck & HGV Insurance FAQs

Wondering about something? Don't worry, Everywhen is here to help. We've put together some common questions about truck insurance to support you every step of the way.

Truck and HGV insurance provides operators with the cover legally required when driving a vehicle on the road — unlimited cover for third-party injury or death, and cover for damage to third-party property of not less than £1.2 million. Comprehensive cover also protects against loss or damage to your own vehicle (an excess will apply to own damage claims — amounts vary and will be detailed in your quotation). The policies we offer are particularly suited to road haulage businesses running HGVs over 7.5T, from a single vehicle up to a full fleet.

We can cover most truck and HGV types, including rigids and articulated lorries (typically 18–44T), tippers, concrete mixers, skip lorries, box/curtain-side, flatbeds, livestock vehicles, aggregate lorries and more. We're also one of the few UK specialists in the heavy haulage and abnormal load market, so speak to us if your vehicle exceeds 44T GVW. Please note we cannot offer cover for personal or pickup trucks.

Most customers choose comprehensive cover, which protects against third-party claims as well as loss or damage to your own vehicle. More limited third-party fire and theft, and third-party only coverage is also available. Cover is available for trailers as well as tractor units.

Any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes used to transport goods commercially.

Yes. Whether you're an owner-driver or a fleet operator, truck and HGV insurance is a legal requirement. Comprehensive cover also protects your vehicles — which represent a significant business investment — against loss and damage

No — we're a one-stop shop. As well as motor insurance, we can arrange goods-in-transit, public liability, employers' liability, breakdown, property, business interruption, cyber cover, commercial legal expenses, uninsured loss recovery and more.

Yes — at least third-party cover is required to operate on public roads.

If you employ anyone — even occasionally or temporarily — you are legally required to have employers' liability insurance, unless an exemption applies (such as a family business where every employee is a close family member and the business is not incorporated as a limited company). We can arrange this alongside your truck and HGV policy. Find out more on the HSE website.

We understand the cost pressures on new businesses and will work with you to explore the cover, service and pricing options available — including introductory and no-claims discounts for drivers with a claim-free history. Discounts are subject to insurers' underwriting criteria and individual circumstances.

While we consider the nature of your work and the locations involved, we can usually find a suitable level of cover. Our specialists have training in this complex area and can advise you over the telephone.

Not always, this is usually added separately depending on your needs.

Yes. We know how important airside cover can be for some operators and can usually arrange it on request.

Don't buy on price alone.

Also consider:

  • Whether the insurer is financially sound and able to pay claims

  • Whether the cover provides the protection you actually need, with no hidden exclusions

  • Whether your broker is a genuine specialist you can rely on for advice

  • The level of service you can expect from both broker and insurer at the point of claim

Premiums vary by insurer and depend on factors including:

  • The value of your vehicles

  • Where your vehicles operate, including abroad

  • The nature of your business activities and any hazardous sites or loads

  • Driver profiles — age, experience, accident and conviction history

  • Whether telematics or camera systems are installed

  • Past claims experience (fleet-rated policies typically apply above 5 vehicles)

In addition to standard exclusions (war risks, radioactive contamination, terrorism), common exclusions include:

  • Claims arising from contractual agreements where a claim wouldn't otherwise have been accepted

  • Use outside what the certificate of insurance permits (e.g. racing or speed testing)

  • Driving by someone not permitted by the certificate, or without a valid licence

  • Vehicles driven 'airside' without specific cover in place

Full terms, conditions and exclusions are available in the policy wording through the quotation process.

Improved security, experienced drivers, and a strong claims history may help reduce premiums.

Yes, fleet policies allow multiple vehicles under one policy, simplifying management.

Yes. We offer a quick and easy direct debit scheme to spread the cost of your annual premium. You will pay under a Premium Finance plan; full details including total payable, number of instalments, cost of each and representative APR will be provided before you proceed.
