What does UK holiday home insurance cover?

Accidental damage cover for holiday homes

We offer accidental damage as standard for owner occupied holiday home properties. For rented or lent properties you can choose to extend your Accidental Damage cover to include damage by any guests, subject to a written rental agreement being in place for rentals.

Alternative accommodation

Temporary Accommodation or Loss of Hiring Charges included as standard if your property is uninhabitable following an insured event at the property.

Cover whilst your home is unoccupied

As long as your home is furnished and has not been empty for more than 60 consecutive days from 1st April and 30th September or is lived in overnight between 1st October and 31st March. You may need to either turn the water off at the internal stop cock where the water enters the home and drain down all pipes and appliances or keep the property at 15c during this period at all times via a thermostatically controlled fixed heating system. (Not applicable to Spanish, Portuguese and Southern Cypriot Holiday Homes.)

When you need to make a claim, we'll guide you through the process and get your claim settled as quickly as possible.

  • Find your insurance documents and make sure you have all your information at hand, including your policy number.

  • Call the claims team on 0345 074 4760 and explain exactly what happened.

  • Provide photos if requested to help us understand what happened as quickly as we can.

If you have a unique case, our Specialist Property team can assess your individual circumstances to confirm if we have a policy for you. As mentioned above it may fit into the category of second home insurance but if not we may still be able to find cover that fits, call the team to discuss your circumstances and we will try our best to find you cover.

We provide cover for replacement locks to external doors of the home, alarm systems and domestic safes fitted in the home if the locks are accidentally lost or stolen.

Most providers will not insure properties which are left unoccupied for more than 30 days at a time, which is why you need to come to a specialist provider.

Our holiday home insurance policy can only cover properties in the UK, Republic of IrelandSpainFrance, Portugal, Italy, Southern Cyprus, Greece and Bulgaria.

It depends on the type of property and policy cover you have. For holiday home cover (‘not let’), if you have accidental damage included in your policy, you will be covered for use by friends and family, so long as you are not letting the property for cash reward. If you have second home insurance, you just need to let us know.

If you are planning on renting your property, you can also get extended holiday home insurance for when your property is ‘let’. Speak to one of our friendly advisors to find out more.

The requirements of your policy will not change, and as your guests may not be familiar with your property it is worth carrying out an inspection after they have left. Your guests must leave the property in accordance with the unoccupied element of your cover, please refer to your policy documents.

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your rowing boat insurance policy, you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium by monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL).
